BEAGLE photo competition

What is living on your tree?

Dear Beagle project Participant

Thank you for being with us and observing your trees as they change through the year.

We would like to invite you to join one more challenge. As you all notice from your observations every tree is much more then just a tree. Every tree is a living island, home and habitat for many different organisms. We would like you to observe them closely. You may well find strange, beautiful and interesting things in your tree. If you can, take a picture and upload it to the BEAGLE website. The most interesting pictures will be chosen by BEAGLE team and received prize for your school!

To take part in the competition you should comply with following rules:

  1. The competition is open to schools from the six project partner countries: Germany, Hungary, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, United Kingdom who have registered at least one  tree on www.beagleproject.org.
  2. You may submit ONE image per tree.
  3. The image must be of the same tree as registered (but you can still register new trees).
  4. The image must be taken by you or your class.
  5. The image must be uploaded in JPEG format in at least 1024 pixels wide and with a maximum file size of 10MB.
  6. The pictures must not have been published electronically before.
  7. The pictures cannot be manipulated using computer programmes.
  8. Adding an interesting title might be an advantage.

Competition dates: 22nd May – 8th October 2010.

Prizes: UK: Prizes for the best picture will include FSC keys and publications. A special prize of a free one day visit to an FSC centre is available for schools in Shropshire/Telford, Surrey and Neath/Port Talbot.

The results would be announced on the Beagle website in November 2010

GOOD LUCK !

To effectively protect the biodiversity first of all we have to know the nature: species and their habitats  - all the complicated life web. The Beagle project is helping you to make the very first step towards this – to get know the trees around you. The BEAGLE competition is announced to celebrate with you the International Year of Biodiversity 2010 and the day of biodiversity 22nd of May.

2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity. It is an opportunity for all the world to recognize the importance of biodiversity for all life on Earth, to reflect on our achievements to protect biodiversity and focus on the urgency of our challenge for the future.

We have identified over 1.5 million different species of micro-organisms, plants and animals. We still don’t know how many species exist but there are probably between 3 and 30 millions. That is perhaps 20 times more then have been described so far. Will we ever get to know them all?  .  Species have been disappearing at 50-100 times the natural rate, and this is predicted to rise dramatically. Based on current trends, an estimated 34000 plant and 5200 animal species - including one in eighth of the world's bird species - face extinction. The reason for this is human activity.
